Less Waste, More Flowers
Modern global floristry is broken. From the harmful chemical use to the enormous carbon footprint to the excessive plastic waste, we can no longer have cheap flowers at the expense of planet and our people. One of the worst offenses of modern floristry is the use of floral foam in floral design. Floral foam is a formaldehyde-based plastic which does not biodegrade but does break down into microscopic specks called microplastics as the floral foam crumbles and dissolves. These microplastics end up in our drinking water, rivers and oceans, invisibly polluting our most precious resource and the life within it. “Bio-Foam” marketed for quicker decomposition characteristics might even be more harmful because it converts into microplastic particles faster than traditional floral foam.
At Yonderyear, we’re proud to be part of the No Floral Foam Movement and design only with reusable and biodegradable materials such as chicken wire, metal structures, wool and coconut coir. Our vessels are glass and we wrap bouquets with recycled kraft paper. As members of the Slow Flowers Society and the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG) we’re committed to participating in local, domestic flower farming and sustainable floristry.
